Teenage girl discovers that the magnets in Apple’s iPad can interfere with defibrillators

Some people aren’t lucky enough to be born with fully functioning hearts and they need an implant that can kickstart their heart should it stop beating. Said implant is called a defibrillator. A 14 year old girl by the name of Gianna Chien recently discovered that the magnets inside an iPad 2, used to attach Apple’s Smart Cover, can accidentally turn off these defibrillators.

Before you get alarmed, know that you have to lay an iPad on a person’s chest for this to happen. Simply walking past someone while using your iPad isn’t going to kill them. Also, Chien only tested her theory with 26 people. She got the defibrillators inside 30% of her subjects to cease functioning. And more importantly, once you take the iPad off a person’s chest, most defibrillators often turn right back on.
Why is this a story then? Because the headline “IPADS MAKE PEOPLE’S HEARTS STOP WORKING” sure is scary to read, isn’t it? Expect to hear plenty of Apple haters to name check Gianna Chien pretty soon. Though I do have to say, respect to her for noticing this problem in the first place.
